Change is an everyday, on-going, never ending reality in our lives and often, we don’t like it—at least not the majority of us! As human beings, we tend to prefer routines and consistency because they tend to produce a sense of security in our lives, thus change is difficult. However difficult change may be though, change can bring about wonderful new opportunities that often provide for a better future. Indeed nowadays, if we do not change, we will be left behind.
As leaders it is critical that we embrace change and do all we can to keep our spirits high, for how we decide to react to change will greatly impact those around us. So how do we effectively deal with change? Below are some tips on how we can use change to our advantage and be successful in this constantly changing world.
1. Step Back
At some point in time, we will all be hit with an unexpected change in our lives. At first glance, this change may appear to be something very negative. However, when we remove ourselves from the situation and view the change as an outsider, often we can see the reason for the change or how the change can help us. Rather than accepting our first reaction to a change, we often need to take a step back and look at the change for what it really is.
2. Focus on the Positive
It has been said that things in our lives that we dwell on tend to expand. Thus, when we focus on the positive, good tends to happen and we feel better. Rather than focusing our attention on the bad, we should strive to focus on what might be good about the change. If we can’t find anything good about a change then we can remember that change has helped us in the past and can help us again in the future if we keep an upbeat attitude. Focusing on the positive will motivate others to do the same.
3. Dream Big
When dealing with change, think about what could be. What would you like to ultimately accomplish? Will this require change? Often when we focus on our dreams, we realize things have to change in order for us to achieve our dreams. Realizing that change can help us achieve our goals and dreams will help us all accept change more readily.
4. Allow for Participation
When a change is going to impact others, allow participation from others as often as possible. Helping others feel as if they had a say in change or their opinions were at least expressed and heard, people will feel much better about the change. Doing this will create “buy-in” for those who have to embrace the change and move forward.
5. Go to Work
Finally, when changes comes about, often the best way to overcome the “change blues” is to go to work. Get busy doing what you always do. Working hard and staying busy will keep you from dwelling or over agonizing over the change. Hard work nearly always results in personal satisfaction.
As leaders, how we react to change is crucial. If our reaction is bad or good, others will follow. When unexpected change happens, if we step back, focus on the positive, dream big, allow others to participate when possible, and go to work, we will motivate others and be more successful leaders.
